2020 was an unprecedented year—marked by uncertainty, change, growth and innovation. Many of us share a similar sentiment of relief in leaving the chaotic year behind while embracing the reality that many of the changes sparked by the pandemic outbreak back in March will likely follow us into the New Year.
One of the most notable shifts resulting from the pandemic was people spending more time at home than ever. Going into 2021, we expect to see this trend remain strong as people continue to work from home, cook meals at home, and take comfort in the safety and security of their homes.
With a growing emphasis on the home and its functionality, many people have questioned the usability of their spaces. After all, studies show that the average person utilizes only 40% of their livable area at home.
As a leader in the home remodeling space, we predict the trends for 2021 will be characterized by the following four categories: the return of warm neutral colors, the desire for purposeful spaces, new and fresh design, and a desire for comfortable living spaces.
Continue reading for a more in-depth take on the latest 2021 home design trends from on of our expert designers.
1. Warm Neutrals & Earthy Tones
Over the last few years, many homes have adopted a modern all-white and gray color palette, a combination that oftentimes can leave spaces feeling a bit cold. In 2021, we will see the return of warm and earthy tones, breathing new life into starkly white spaces. Gray can continue to be a go-to hue in a sense, with its newest counterpart ‘greige’ serving as a tasteful blend of warm and cool neutrals.
Whether used as accents or major colors in a palette, burgundy, earthy greens, cranberry and nature-inspired browns will become very popular. Even our forever-trending blue hues will project a warmer undertone. Additionally, we’ll see the use of neutral colors with vibrant pops of color throughout all areas of the home.
2. Purposeful Repurposed Spaces
The pandemic has changed the way people work, entertain and live. Creating dedicated home offices/workspaces has become a priority with so many people still working from home. Additionally, missing out on theaters, gyms and restaurants has left people craving these activities from the safety and comfort of their own homes.
As a result, many homeowners are enlarging and/or upgrading their kitchens to create more functional spaces to entertain. Larger family rooms, accessible dining rooms and outdoor spaces that can be used year-round have become very desirable. Many homeowners are also considering investing in enclosed patios, indoor-outdoor living spaces, casitas and pool houses for entertaining as well as getting some fresh air and spending time in nature.
3. New & Fresh Design
For 2021 we expect to see a continued growth in livable luxury and sustainable design. Homeowners will want to see more innovative design styles that use technology, easy to clean surfaces and fabrics. Livable luxury will provide beautiful spaces that are functional and inviting.
The use of natural materials such as wood, whicker, rattan, caning and exotic marbles will be a popular way of creating interest in the home. Patterned and bold wallpaper will be the end to drab walls. Glossy millwork, warm brass and gold metals will continue to be a popular way to warm up renovated spaces.
4. Warm & Cozy Spaces
After weeks and months of spending more time at home than ever, people have realized that their homes should be their sanctuaries, where they can relax, restore and retreat from the chaos of the world outside. With sterile spaces trending out, classical and traditional styles with modern touches will be more sought after. Traditional spaces tend to have symmetry and softness to them that can be very personalized.
Even minimalism and modern homes will have more warmth with the use of textures and patterns in furnishings and unique built-in cabinetry. Additionally, we will see textured and/or exotic natural stones in fireplaces and large seating areas that are comfortable, but still luxurious.
