The design experts at Huntington Remodeling have spoken! Take a look at some of the 2022 design trends and home improvement themes we expect to see everywhere throughout the upcoming year. In case you missed it, here were our predictions last year for 2021 interior design trends.
The post-pandemic world has everyone craving connection to nature as a counterbalance to our ultra-connected, technology driven world—we’re seeing this home design trend for 2022 reflected in the home with the popularity of earthy hues, natural textures, and surge in demand for outdoor living spaces. Warm-toned kitchens with natural wood-stained cabinets, shades of green, light oak wood flooring, natural stone fireplaces, wood ceiling beams and indoor-outdoor living renovations are just a few of the nature-inspired trends currently infiltrating design.
Black accents have been popping up more and more as they provide a striking contrast against natural wood tones, which have also been a staple as of late. We are seeing this trend primarily in the form of plumbing fixtures, hardware, and window trim.
Whereas clean, sharp edges and modern lines were once the trend, we are now seeing more curves and rounded edges in various design elements throughout the home. These smooth curves are showing up as arched hallways, modern rounded furniture pieces, pendant lighting, and other décor elements.
The home office trend is here to stay, as experts predict that office life will not return to the way it was pre-pandemic with many employers continuing to allow WFH flexibility and testing a hybrid approach. Permanent workspaces allow remote workers to optimize productivity, maintain privacy and boost creativity in spaces dedicated and designed to function as such.
The open-shelving 2022 design trend has been catching steam lately, providing homeowners with functional storage space that doubles as a display for decor. We have implemented several lighted floating shelf displays this past year and expect to continue into 2022.
One of the strongest residential building and remodeling trends in recent years has been the growth of wellness design. According to the 2021 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, two in five surveyed homeowners report using their renovated bathroom for rest and relaxation. The survey also found that cleanliness and a lack of clutter are keys to creating a “spa-like atmosphere” in the bath. Health and wellness have been top-of-mind for people ever since the pandemic hit, resulting in an increasing desire for home improvements that also serve as an investment in their family’s overall wellbeing. These wellness-focused renovations include enhanced outdoor living spaces, spa-like bathrooms, home gyms, and easy-to-clean surfaces.
Hyper-organization has been a key theme resulting from the pandemic as people have been spending more time in their homes than ever. Concealed storage can keep help reduce clutter, save space and allow for a more peaceful environment. Custom drawers can also be tailored to the homeowners’ specific needs and ensure everything has its own place to streamline daily routines.
Wall paneling is a classic design element that adds a beautiful and simplistic texture to more contemporary design aesthetics.
Another pandemic-related trend we will continue to see demand for flex spaces in homes as people seek solutions for multiple needs with limited space. Such spaces have grown in popularity as people’s needs continue to change over time, for example the need for semi-permanent workspaces for those working from home.
As connection to the outdoors is seen as more essential than ever to our overall health and well-being, outdoor living spaces have been at the top of the many homeowners’ wish lists. They are requesting expansive outdoor living spaces complete with functional kitchens, covered lounge areas and firepits for a luxurious, resort-kind-of-vibe in the comfort of their own backyards.
